Do You Shave Before or After a Spray Tan?

Before — 12 to 24 hours ahead. Here is why the timing matters more than people expect, and what waxing changes.

Before. Twelve to twenty-four hours ahead.

That’s the whole answer, but the reasoning is worth thirty seconds because it explains a lot of other spray tan rules at the same time.

Why before

A razor is an exfoliant. That’s not a metaphor — dragging a blade across your skin takes off the top layer along with the hair.

Sunless colour lives in exactly that layer. So shaving after your tan doesn’t just remove hair, it removes tan. You’ll see it immediately: lighter, patchy stripes wherever the razor went.

Why not right before

Shaving opens your pores. Spraying into freshly opened pores is how you get tiny dark dots across your legs — the solution settles into openings that should have closed.

Twelve to twenty-four hours is the window where the hair is gone but your skin has settled. Early enough that pores have closed, late enough that stubble hasn’t returned.

Waxing is different

Wax 24 to 48 hours ahead, not 12.

Waxing is more disruptive than shaving — it pulls from the follicle and leaves skin more reactive. It needs longer to calm down, and any residual wax or oil will block the solution.

Do not wax after a spray tan. Wax strips take colour off in sheets, which is exactly as bad as it sounds.

What to do mid-tan

If you need to shave during the week your tan is alive, you can — just accept that you’ll lighten those areas, and go gently. A fresh, sharp blade does less damage than a dull one dragging.

Skip the exfoliating scrub beforehand, use a non-oil-based shave product, and moisturise after.

Where this fits

Prep order, start to finish:

  1. Exfoliate 48 hours before
  2. Shave 12–24 hours before (or wax 24–48 hours before)
  3. Exfoliate again the night before
  4. Shower no sooner than 3 hours before
  5. Nothing on your skin after that shower

Quick answers

Do you shave before or after a spray tan?

Before, 12 to 24 hours ahead. Shaving after a tan exfoliates the colour off. If you wax, do it 24 to 48 hours ahead.

What happens if I shave after my spray tan?

A razor is an exfoliant, so shaving removes the top layer of skin where the colour lives. It will visibly lighten or streak the areas you shave.
